When moving out of a rental or even if you’ve sold your house, you will need to complete an end of lease clean from top to bottom. Your landlord will likely expect your home to be in immaculate condition before you can claim your bond back. Similarly, it’s polite to leave the house spotless for new owners. Unless you hire high end movers, you will have to clean the place yourself. Find out how to complete a flawless end of lease clean!
Odour Removal
A critical aspect of end of lease cleaning that many people overlook is odour removal. No one wants to move into a home that smells like cigarette smoke or the previous owner’s dog. Removing odour from the house will help boost its cleanliness in the eyes of the new owners or your landlord.
Smoke
No matter if it’s from cigars, cigarettes, or other tobacco products, smoke is one of the hardest smells to get rid of. As you begin cleaning, open up all of the windows and doors to get good airflow through the house.
One helpful tip that you could try is to place a box of baking soda in the rooms with the most smell, as this can help to deodorise the area. Also, wash the curtains, bedding, and any other fabrics as these can hold onto odour for a long time.
Pets
The lingering odours from your pets are usually the smell of urine or defecation. These can be a challenge to get rid of entirely as aromas penetrate your carpet, which is hard to thoroughly clean. Sprinkle any affected areas with baking soda and vacuum it up. If that doesn’t work, use a carpet shampoo for a deeper clean.
Musty Smells
Areas that don’t get a lot of light or airflow can, over time, develop a musty odour. This is the result of mould spores, and you definitely don’t want the new tenants to spot any mould in the home! Spray any mould you find with a mould removal spray. For a more natural method, mix clove oil with some warm water and dab on the area.
Kitchen Cleaning
The area that you’ll likely spend the most time cleaning before you move is the kitchen. Kitchens are often the dirtiest room in the home due to the amount of food that can splatter everywhere, dust collected on shelves, and food dropped behind the fridge. Clean your kitchen after your high end movers have moved the larger items like the fridge for the most comprehensive clean possible.
Here’s what you need to clean in your kitchen:
- Oven – thoroughly clean using oven cleaner. Make sure that you wear gloves and a mask, as this is a highly toxic substance. Don’t forget to remove and individually spray all the trays and clean them too before putting them back in.
- Fridge – many tenants forget to clear food out of the refrigerator on moving day. It could be weeks before the new occupants move in – don’t let them arrive to mouldy food in the fridge! Empty your fridge and freezer, and clean and dry them thoroughly. Then switch them off at the wall and leave the doors open so that mould can’t build up inside.
- Dishwasher – dishwashers can build up a lot of grime over time if you don’t clean them regularly. Clear out the dishwasher and put it on a cleaning cycle to fully cleanse it.
- Every Cabinet and Shelf – don’t just clean the main cabinets in your kitchen. You need to wipe down every single shelf until the whole room is spotless.
Exterior Cleaning
A commonly neglected part of any home when it comes to the end of lease clean is the exterior. When was the last time you cleaned your barbecue and outdoor furniture? Even though you may be taking these items with you, it’s a good idea to clean them before relocating them to your new place.
Here’s what to clean outside:
- Cobwebs and dust from your home’s entire exterior, including the windowsills and walls
- Mow the lawn, weed the gardens, sweep any paths, and trim the edges
- Wash down the deck
- Clear out the gutters
- Make sure that all outdoor lighting is working as it should
- Sweep out your garage and driveway
- Remove all rubbish from the property
Interior Cleaning
It’s a given that you’ll need to vacuum, clean the bathroom, and so on. Here are some other things you need to clean inside your home that you may not have considered:
- Clean out the inside of your wardrobes, including any shelving
- Check that all lights are working and clean the fittings and switches
- Wipe down the windowsills, skirting boards, and tops of doors
- Clean the windows
- Get rid of any cobwebs and dust
- Dust your ceiling fan
- Clean your curtains and blinds
- Pour drain cleaner down the drains to get them back to optimal condition
