Moving trends for professional movers helping with moving interstate

Top Moving Trends for 2021

2021 has been a massive year of unprecedented change for Australians. With Covid cases surging up and down, lockdown restrictions have come and gone all year long so far, with no signs that this will let up any time soon. This has affected moving trends as many Aussies have taken this chance to reconsider where they want to live, with plenty moving interstate to be closer to family and friends.

Moving Interstate

Across January, February, and March 2021, more than one hundred thousand people ended up moving interstate in Australia. With 104,100 people in total choosing to move to another state, this is a trend that’s likely to continue into the rest of 2021.

Compared with the same time period last year, 16,400 more people moved interstate in 2021. That’s a massive amount of people and belongings being transported between states.

Moving trends like this can occur for a range of reasons. Some people may want to be closer to their families as Covid-19 restrictions have otherwise prevented many Aussies from seeing their loved ones. For others, they may have spent more time at home than ever before, enabling these people to realise that they would rather live elsewhere.

More Aussies Going Rural

Overall, moving trends showed that Australia’s major cities lost 11,800 people to internal migration, meaning that more people departed these cities than moved to them. This is the largest net loss on record for the quarter. Melbourne lost the most residents, losing 8,273 people while Sydney was close behind, recording a loss of 8,169 city dwellers.

Meanwhile, Brisbane and Perth both managed to gain residents; 3,274 and 1,554, respectively. Regional towns are also experiencing a boom of new residents. There are more jobs in these communities for those considering moving interstate, which is a large part of the appeal.

Many younger families and millennials are choosing to move outside of the main cities, likely due to the fact that they have been working from home anyway for the better part of the past year. One survey found that around 20% of respondents are considering moving to the regions. Two-thirds of those people would do so in the next year.

Moving To or From Melbourne

So, where is Melbourne at in all of this? As of the year ending 30 June 2021, data shows that while there was a surge of people leaving the city and moving interstate in August 2020 during the initial prolonged lockdown, migration did slow again. However, with the recent resurgence of cases due to the Delta variant, migration out of the city has risen once again.

Moving During Lockdowns

Ever since Melbourne put its residents into a snap 2-week lockdown in June, searches have risen for the search term ‘can I move during lockdown’, with over 100,000 people looking up this phrase. Meanwhile, 1.1 million searches have been made for questions related to moving house during Covid since restrictions first began back in March last year.

The number of people looking to move while Covid restrictions are in place will likely continue to remain steady as people become sick of staring at the same 4 walls for months on end.

The government is also incentivising people to move, with grants available for job seekers who are moving because they have found work. Grants include up to $6,000 for those moving to the regions or $3,000 for those moving to a major city. This money is intended to cover costs for accommodation, travel, and hiring professional movers.

Is it Time for You to Move Interstate?

Here are some signs it might be time for you to hire professional movers and move interstate:

  • You’re far from friends or family – with Covid restrictions, we are isolated enough without also being far away from our loved ones. If you can’t even see your family as restrictions ease, it might be time to move.
  • You hate your home – we are all spending more time at home than ever before. If your family has outgrown your house, you have no outdoor space, or your home just doesn’t suit your needs, you should consider moving.
  • You want to get out of the city – just as many other Australians are getting sick of city life holed up in an apartment all day, you may be too. Moving to a regional area could help you to afford a larger home with more land.
  • You’ve lost your job – many Australians have lost their jobs in the past year and a half. If your work was the only thing tying you to where you live, it could be time to move elsewhere for better work opportunities and the chance of a government grant!
  • You’re not close to amenities – as restrictions can mean that you can only move a small radius from your home, you may find that you’re not as close to necessary amenities as you’d like. If you live far from a doctor, supermarket, or other necessity, you may be thinking of moving.
